Terms of Service
Effective 1 October 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and William Hsu, an individual developer in Ontario, Canada ("we", "us"), about your use of Windwright, the browser game at windwright.dev (the "Game"). By entering an invite code or playing the Game, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not play.
Our Privacy Policy explains what information the Game collects and how to ask us to delete it.
1. What Windwright is
Windwright is a garden game where you write Python code to wake creatures that tend a garden. It is in early development and is offered as a free, private playtest. It is unfinished. Things will change, break, or disappear, and that is part of why you are here: your feedback shapes it.
2. It is free
The playtest is free. There are no purchases, subscriptions, ads, or in-game currency, and we will never ask for payment details inside the playtest. If we ever offer anything for sale, it will come with its own clear terms and prices, and you will not be charged for anything without agreeing to that first.
3. Who can play
- You may play if you are 10 or older.
- If you are under 18, please read these terms with a parent or guardian.
- Some optional features have their own age limit. The new-clearings email note is for people aged 16 or older only, and players under 16 send feedback without a name.
4. Invite codes
- Each invite code is for one person and works once. When it is accepted, the browser you used is let in for up to 180 days.
- Codes are personal and cannot be transferred. Please do not post, share, sell, or trade them. If someone else would like to play, ask us for another code.
- We may stop a code or end access at any time, for example if a code has been shared publicly or the playtest ends.
- Codes have no cash value.
5. Acceptable use
Please play fairly and kindly. When using the Game you agree not to:
- try to guess, generate, or brute-force invite codes, or get into the Game without a valid code
- interfere with, overload, or attack the Game, its servers, or the services it relies on, including through automated requests
- use the feedback or sign-up forms to send spam, abuse, threats, unlawful content, other people's personal information, or anything that is not feedback or your own email address
- use the Game to break any law
- copy, resell, or redistribute the Game or its art, music, models, or text, except as allowed in section 7
The Python you write runs inside your own browser. You are responsible for what you choose to run.
6. Your content
- The code you write in the Game is yours. It is saved in your browser, and we do not receive it unless you choose to send it to us (for example by pasting it into feedback).
- When you send us feedback or ideas, you let us use them, for free and without owing you anything, to improve the Game and related projects. We will not publish your name with your feedback without asking.
7. Our content and other people's content
- The Game, including its code, art, 3D models, writing, characters, and the name and logo "Windwright", belongs to William Hsu or is used under licence. These terms give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to play the Game in your browser during the playtest. They do not give you any other rights.
- You may take and share screenshots and short clips of your own play, for example on social media, as long as you do not suggest we endorse you and you do not include other people's private information.
- Some parts of the Game are made by others and used under their licences, including the Python interpreter (Pyodide and CPython), the code editor (Monaco), open-source libraries, fonts under the SIL Open Font License, and sound effects credited in the Game's settings. Those licences apply to those parts. They are listed in the open-source notices.
- "Python" is a registered trademark of the Python Software Foundation. The Game teaches the Python language and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Python Software Foundation.
8. Saves and data loss
Your progress is stored in your own browser. It can be lost if you clear your browser data, use private browsing, switch browsers or devices, or if an update to the Game cannot carry an old save forward. We try hard to keep saves working, but during the playtest we cannot promise that progress will be kept.
9. Feedback and support
We read feedback but cannot promise to reply to every message or to act on every idea. There is no guaranteed support during the playtest. You can reach us at hello@windwright.dev.
10. Changes and ending the playtest
We may change the Game, these terms, or the playtest at any time, and may end the playtest or anyone's access to it. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and, where we can, tell you in the Game. If you keep playing after a change, the new terms apply.
11. Disclaimers
The Game is a free, unfinished test version. It is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows. We do not promise that the Game will be available, error-free, or secure, or that it will teach you any particular skill.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost data or lost progress, arising from your use of the Game. Because the Game is free, our total liability to you for any claim about it is limited to 50 Canadian dollars.
Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by law, or our liability for anything that cannot be limited by law, such as death or personal injury caused by negligence, or fraud.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be handled in the courts of Ontario, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim in your local courts, in which case you keep that right.
14. General
- If part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
- If we do not enforce part of these terms straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- You may not transfer your rights under these terms. We may transfer ours, for example if the Game moves to a company we form.
- These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the playtest.
